RIBA

KENT // STUDENT MENTEE

NOV' 2018 - FEB' 2019

Each year the South East branch of RIBA organises a mentoring scheme whereby a number of students from the final year of their Part 1 programme are teamed up with an architectural practitioner from the local region. They meet up with this practitioner on occasion to learn the ins and outs of the architecture industry. I was paired with GDM Architects, based in Maidstone, Kent. With them, we were able to briefly experience a real-life architectural office, see what a local planning permissions meeting is like, and gain an introduction to an architectural construction site.

KENT SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

CANTERBURY // ACADEMIC PEER MENTOR

SEP' 2017 - MAR' 2019

A scheme implemented by the Kent School of Architecture, it aims to use students with experience in the course to help those at a more junior level to do even better with managing their studies and life at university. In my first year as a mentor (my stage 2), I oversaw two stage 1 students. In my second year as a mentor (my stage 3), I advised a stage 2 peer. Here, I aided them and their projects in matters such as design brief discussion, investigation tips (for site analysis), precedent suggestions, design techniques, design guidance, as well as drawing and presentation techniques.

PLASTIC FREE SEAS

HONG KONG // STUDENT COORDINATOR

APR' 2015 - DEC' 2015

My CAS Project involved cleaning beaches around Hong Kong and then making jewellery from any sea glass found. This jewellery was then sold during the RCHK 2015 School Fair to raise funds as well as raise awareness of the problem of pollution on Hong Kong’s beaches. We collaborated with the local Hong Kong charity, Plastic Free Seas, which was the organisation where the profits of this Project were donated to.

SIDE-BY-SIDE ORGANIC FARM

BALI // STUDENT VOLUNTEER

NOV' 2014

The RCHK Bali CAS trip team were tasked with renovating one pond, of which crabs had managed to infiltrate and create holes in the cement bottom of the pond. This in turn allowed water to escape. This renovation was intended to allow the farm to save some money in the long run. Tasked with this renovation, RCHK Bali CAS trip team managed to remove 3 tonnes of sand and rock, from the bottom of the drained pond on the first day. On the second day, 1.6 tonnes of sand and cement were moved; and on the third day, 1.4 tonnes of sand and cement were moved.

'ehh' apparel startup company ad work

A friend of mine started an apparel company, and I was asked if I could help out with creating the advertisements. So far, I have been involved in shooting the ad campaign, modelling, photo editing, and graphic design advice. He has now decided to cease all business activities to make a charity instead of Ehh.

ukc Kickboxing logo submission

After participating in the University of Kent's Kickboxing society, I was asked to submit a potential re-vamped logo to represent them in the new academic year.

Fusion 360 workshop

I attended a workshop delivered by Steve Cox (a freelance consultant specialising in 3D technologies) that served as an Introduction to Autodesk Fusion 360 workshop. The session was a one day introductory workshop for students, who like me, had little or no knowledge of Fusion 360. During this workshop I learnt the interface and navigation of Fusion 360; how to create 3D geometry using sketch-driven design techniques, free-form complex surface modelling and sheet metal creation. Following on from creating models, I learnt downstream techniques such as rendering, simulation (stress analysis), creation of working mechanical assemblies, creating 2D drawings and preparation of parts for Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and 3D printing. This software was of particular interest for me to learn how to use as it is able to function on both Mac and Windows operating systems.

2018

Rhino workshop

This Rhino workshop provided me with the insight and skills to model and manipulate design ideas in the versatile 3D modelling software Rhino. During this Beginner’s Rhino Workshop I learnt the interface and navigation of Rhino 3D; how to draw, creating and editing geometry using curves and arcs using 2D Rhino commands before learning how to create sculptural forms using methods of generating 3D geometry and Rhinos editing tools. The workshop was delivered by Thomas Bush, from Foster + Partners.

2018

milan design week

In my three days in Milan I had attended Salone del Mobile and a few exhibits from Fuorisalone. In the Salone del Mobile exhibition, I visited various kitchen, bathrooms, and tiling companies, as well as some student-designed works. While wandering around the city, the Fuorisalone exhibits that I visited included Modulnova, Kerlite, SMARTOWN by eni & Centrica Hive Limited.

2016

Trashion

Together with a colleague from school, I designed 4 outfits from rubbish (such as Lai See packets, our old Christmas tree, and fairy lights), and these were displayed as part of a school-wide ‘Trashion Show’ held at RCHK on 29 April, 2016.
